Introduction: Novice critical care nurses often report having low self-confidence and effective communication skills when transitioning to the ICU practice, often due to stress, limited experience, and unfamiliarity with critical care environments. These challenges can not only affect their job satisfaction and retention rates, but also pose serious risks to patient safety and outcomes. The purpose of this evidence-based practice (EBP) project was to assess the impact of an escape room simulation on the self-efficacy and communication skills of novice critical care nurses.

Methods: An evidence-based practice (EBP) project with pre-test and post-test design was conducted to measure the impact an escape room simulation had on their self-efficacy and communication skills on novice nurses employed in critical care at Lahey Hospital and Medical Center. Outcomes were evaluated using the General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES) in addition to descriptive analysis of open-ended questions about their communication.

Results: A total of nine novice nurses were included in the data analysis. Results showed a statistically significant increase in self-efficacy scores after the nurses engaged in the escape room simulation. Qualitative data revealed themes around their sense of improved communication, teamwork, and confidence following the escape room simulation.

Conclusion: The novel implementation of escape room simulation training can be a feasible and valuable tool in nursing education to support novice nurses in feeling more confident and improving communication while transitioning into critical care.
